What is the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)?

The Early Years Learning Framework is Australia's national curriculum document for early childhood education and care. It applies to children from birth to age five and sets the direction for educators working in kindergartens, preschools, child care centres, and family day care in Perth and across the country. The EYLF is not a prescriptive program but rather a guide to help educators intentionally plan learning experiences and document children's progress.

The framework rests on three overarching concepts. Belonging refers to children's need to connect with others and feel secure in their community. Being emphasises the importance of what children experience in the here and now rather than only preparation for the future. Becoming focuses on children's growth and development over time.

The EYLF identifies five learning outcomes that guide educators' practice.

• Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
• Children are confident and involved learners
• Children are effective communicators

These outcomes are broad, flexible, and culturally inclusive.
